This is an article that was in the Boston Globe. http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/articles/2010/03/07/whos_still_biased/?page=full
Articles like this I find frustrating as the studies done on diversity training have not been robust in many ways and the ways that success is being measured is being done from the point of view of promotions of women and people of color. Diversity is so much more than just this. But, until research is done that captures more than these, people will continue to say that diversity training doesn’t work. My experience has been that diversity training done in isolation is not that effective. The training must be done within a context. People need to know why it is important, what the link to the business case for the organization is and why they should be engaged on a personal level. For diversity programs to be effective they must be supported and sustained for the long haul. Creating diverse and inclusive workplaces is a cultural shift and culture changes do not happen overnight. Like any other type of change they take persistent efforts and attention.
