It confirms what you have pointed out in the UK: while men are the minority in the field, they are often more likely to be found at the top level. Taking a brief look at the management level positions at various arts institutions here in Boston, an overwhelming majority are men in the director roles, and women seem to disproportionately occupy the middle tier and support roles. 

The arts have been stereotyped for a long time as &#039;feminine&#039;, and is only slowly being more accepted among the male population. Perhaps once this can be dropped by society,  equality can be achieved at feeder levels. I agree completely; ability should come first, but it also makes you wonder why women seem to dominate the middle tier positions.

Here in the UK it appears that although men hold more of the major positions in Museums and Galleries, there is a notable imbalance in the second tier of management, administration and support roles in favour of women. I don&#039;t have the figures, but this is certainly what I am seeing. The Art History courses seem hugely subscribed by women and consequently lead to placement in appropriate positions following studies. At a lecture in the Courtauld Institute London last week (Museums without walls: Showing Art in a Digital Age), I was one of 29 men in a theatre of 131 and I must add that in my estimation those attending were approximately 90% white aged 20 - 35. I can&#039;t help feeling that perhaps it is not just the deficiency of gender in this arena which should attract scrutiny. I could not comment on ratio and percentages regarding higher posts in Arts institutions, but there are a few (some high profile galleries) with women directors. I do know that in one of these, the staff count is 83% female. Of course the real issue is that male/female/young/elderly/black/white/able-bodied/disabled/others, the ability to perform in the role is of prime importance. Returning to the original gender question, clearly any imbalance at feeder level (colleges &amp; educational establishments) will not provide a basis for a full &#039;learning&#039; engagement and may lead to some questioning, if not a little resentment in some quarters. Hence, I for one am interested in statistical data that may shed some light on the current equation. I have no knowledge regarding any such parallels in the USA - maybe there is a similar trend there and one which may need to be addressed.</description>
